In Utah, we have alkaline soil and I want to remove some shrubs, amend the soil and plant stuff that like it more acidic. What can I add to the soil? I will fertilize regularly with a fertilizer for acid loving plants, but I hear the alkaline will keep leaching back into the soil. What all can I do to raise the acidity so I can have pink hydrangeas instead of white? (or even blue?) Thanks!
How to acidify alkaline soil?
I agree; more plants like alkaline soil than acid.
But if you really want to go acid, dig a heap of lawn clippings (or pine needlies or shredded christmas trees) into the area. These will both add acid to your soil as they decompose.
Reply:Peat moss will acidify alkaline soil; organic matter is always of benefit to any soil.
Reply:If you want to grow plants that like an acid soil, try putting them in very large pots where you can control the soil mixture better.
If you want to try converting some of your beds to an acid environment, you'll need to add a lot of organic matter and some agricultural sulfur. You will probably need to continue adding sulfur from time to time to maintain the pH in the correct range.
Reply:Mix vinegar into your watering can, not a lot.... maybe 1 teaspoon per gallon. It will add acidity to it.
Never tried this personally so I don't know how it will work out though.
Reply:It is best to stick with alkaline plants and shrubs. When we start trying to change the soil, it only last a short time and then you will lose your plants and shrubs. Fertilizer do not help.
We have alkaline soil too and wonderful things grow in it. Here is a list of flowers:
