We just moved and there is no type of landscaping in the yard. I would like to plant some flowers or flowering shrubs in the front and back. The front gets quite a bit of sun and the back is pretty shady. I am in Kenosha, which is southeastern Wisconsin, in the MidWest. I really like hydrangeas and dahlias, but don't know anything about planting, care, etc. Please any advice for an extreme novice on a budget. Thanks a lot!
What flowers/plants to plant between now and the fall in Wisconsin?
Fall and winter are great times to plant shrubs. It's also the time to plant bulbs for next spring.
Check out your local nurseries and garden centers. They can give you expert advice that you won't generally find at the big box stores on what grows well in your area of the Midwest. You'll also find lot's of end of season bargains.

Reply:Hi...I live in se wisconsin too....you can plant any of the perennials right now!!! in fact I just planted a bunch on sunday...lol they are really cheap right now. hydrangeas can be planted now you also might want to look into weigalia it is a shrub that flowers all summer long. below is the site for the nursery that I go to..(sure wish I would have saw this question this weekend....super big sale!) but their prices are still really good! and they will help you...all you have to do is ask...very nice people. and their plants and shrubs are extremely healthy and worth every penny.
Reply:Now is the time to plant your bulbs for a beautiful spring garden. You can plant tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, etc. for some nice early color next spring. When planting bulbs be sure to put a little bone meal in the hole with the bulb -- it's a great fertilizer.
If you want some color now you can go with mums and "icicle" pansies. The pansies are amazing and will go through the winter and into the spring.
Reply:Now is the perfect time to plant shrubs, trees and other perennials. They'll have a little time to get settled in before they go dormant for the winter and they'll be ready for spring the second it arrives. Find a local nursery and they'll work with you. Locally earned nurseries rely on repeat business and will do everything they can to make you happy.
Remember to plan ahead. If your planting a tree that will end up very large, don't plant shrubs nearby that need sun. Make sure to ask lots of questions about how big things will get and how much sun and water they will need.
Reply:in new jersey this time of the year we do a lot of mums.
they're already in bloom and they're cheap here. say 3 for $10.00
the other answers are great.
